Visual arts

Children drawing with pastels at an art workshop
For children from age 4

When talent takes on colour and shape

Visual art is tangible proof that talent really exists. Here your child can create original work of their own and grow their creativity and imagination with experienced teachers.

Above all, though, it's about the pure joy of making things.

Today the visual arts department teaches more than 500 children with a team of nine teachers.

What children will work with

Each technique teaches something different: drawing builds precision and observation, painting a feel for colour, ceramics patience and skilful hands. Over time children try them all:

  • drawing
  • painting in watercolour, tempera, acrylic and soft pastel
  • printmaking
  • modelling and ceramics
  • 3D work
  • mixed media

Beyond the studio

You can't learn art in a classroom alone. We take pupils to galleries, in 2026 to the Miloš Alexander Bazovský Gallery in Trenčín and to the Nitra Gallery. Children draw with chalk at the Painted Square event in Bánovce, and their work hangs at the Umenie dedín (Art of the Villages) exhibition at the Partizánske cultural centre, which held its 12th edition in May 2026.

We also enter art competitions. In 2025/2026 we won the regional round of Vesmír očami detí (Space through children's eyes) in Trenčín.

For older pupils: the road to art school

If your child is thinking about a secondary art school, we'll prepare them for the entrance exams. For many young artists it's the first step towards a career they'll enjoy.

How to apply for visual arts

  1. Fill in the online application

Applications go through the iZUŠ system. The printout has three pages: the application, a declaration and consent to the processing of personal data. Ideally, bring it to enrolment already signed.

  2. Entrance assessment

A short session with a teacher at the branch. It's not a test of finished skills; we're looking at potential.

At the assessment we look at:

    • a few pieces of the child's own work to bring along
    • the ability to work independently
    • an interest in art and art techniques

Your child brings an apron, brushes, watercolours and pencils. Other materials are bought from the materials fund.

  3. Decision

The school management decides on admission. We send you the result by email along with the formal admission decision.

Entrance assessments for the 2026/2027 school year took place at the branches in June 2026. If you'd like your child to start now, write to us or give us a call and we'll tell you where there's still a free place.
