Departments

Four departments, one school

Where your child's talent can take off

Each department has its own programme, its own teachers and its own teaching locations. On this page you'll find the age we accept children from, what they'll learn, what it costs and where your nearest branch is. Not sure what would suit your child yet? Further down we explain how to choose.

Dance

Modern, jazz, folk and classical dance. Children build good posture and fitness, and regularly perform at competitions at home and abroad.

How to choose

Not sure which department to pick?

You don't need to know straight away. Five-year-olds in nursery schools can join Rytmíkovo, our music readiness programme. It lets the teacher see what your child is good at and what they enjoy, and then recommend the department where they're most likely to thrive.

Children can attend more than one department. In that case the contribution and the department fund are paid for each department separately.

How the course works

From preparatory class to graduate

  1. Preparatory course

A first taste of the department for the youngest children, so they can find out whether dance, music, art or drama really is their thing.

  2. Main course, first stage

It has two parts. After the first part pupils hold a primary arts qualification, after the second a lower secondary arts qualification.

  3. Main course, second stage

For older pupils who want to keep going. We also prepare talented pupils for entrance exams to secondary art schools and conservatoires.

  4. Courses for adults

Art has no upper age limit, so we teach adults too.

Dance, visual arts and drama are taught in groups of 8 to 20 pupils. Music is taught one-to-one, so the teacher focuses on your child alone.

Parents' questions

What parents ask us most

We accept children from age 4 in dance and visual arts. Music starts at 5, and for five-year-olds we run Rytmíkovo, a music readiness programme. Children who are not yet 5 by 31 August can only join the group departments: dance, visual arts and drama.

We're not expecting a finished artist. The assessment looks at potential: in dance, spatial awareness, rhythm and natural movement; in visual arts, a few pieces of the child's own work and the ability to work independently; in music, rhythm and pitch; in drama, clear speech and whether the child can repeat a short text with expression.

On the main course the monthly contribution is €12 in dance, visual arts and drama and €15 in music. It's paid six months in advance, by 30 September and by 28 February. On top of that there is a yearly department fund paid to the Umenie nás spája civic association. Hand in your child's education voucher on time and we take €20 off the fund.

Submitting an application doesn't guarantee a place. The school management decides on admission and we let you know by email together with a formal admission decision. We try to accommodate everyone, but if a group is full we may offer a different department or specialism.

Dancers need dance shoes and clothing; art pupils need an apron, brushes, watercolours and pencils. You provide your child's musical instrument yourself, as the school does not lend instruments.
